How does sunlight damage your skin?

Many people like to soak in the sunlight to get a glorious tan. But many times, excessive exposure to harmful UV rays can cause skin damage. Sun damage is one of the leading causes of a range of skin issues. You may develop skin conditions such as dark spots, premature aging, and even skin cancer due to harmful UV rays from the sun. The skin damage caused by solar radiation is also known as photodamage. It can happen when the skin is directly under prolonged sun exposure without any sun protection, such as sunscreen. It may affect different skin types in many different ways. Some people may experience sun damage in the upper layer, such as the dermis. However, photodamage happens when the sun damage reaches the skin’s deeper layer called the epidermis.

What are the adverse effects of sun damage?

The damage from the sun may cause many adverse effects on the skin, which are as follows:

  • Premature wrinkles

  • loss of skin elasticity

  • Dark spots/patches

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Skin darkening

  • Rough and uneven skin texture

  • Changes in skin tone

  • Dryness

  • Fragile skin

  • Skin irritation or redness

  • Spider veins

  • Inflammatory pigmentation

  • Skin cancer

Sun damage may affect any part of your body, including the face, neck, chest, back, arms, hands, and legs. The UV exposure destroys the collagen and elastin in the skin, which may cause loss of elasticity in the skin. Moreover, the sun’s rays increase melanin production, turning freckles into dark spots or enlarging the existing age spots.

How to avoid sun damage?

Although sun damage cannot be completely avoided, it can be minimized to some extent with the following tips:

  • Make sure to apply appropriate cream for oily or dry to normal skin before putting on an SPF 30-50 sunscreen. It is highly recommended to use DP derm’s anti-aging sunscreen for maximum coverage and protection from sun damage every day.

  • You can also avoid/minimize direct sun exposure by wearing protective clothing that covers any exposed parts of your body, such as arms and legs.

  • You should use high-quality anti-aging cream for wrinkled skin and photodamaged skin by DP derm, which are infused with natural healing extracts that will help restore your skin’s health.

  • It is also recommended to avoid tanning beds as they emit a high amount of UVA and UVB light which may cause photodamage.
